Coffee break exercise: Free-writing

Free-write in longhand in this week's creative writing exercise.

Take a blank piece of paper and a pen or pencil. Without thinking too much about it, start writing.

Let your thoughts take you were they will, and write them down. Write until you fill a page, in any form. It doesn't need to be structured sentences and paragraphs. It might be a list, or a chart, or a mixture of words and doodles.

Look at your writing. How has your handwriting changed as the ideas began to flow? How have you expressed your ideas on the page?

Why not pick out some of your favourite words and phrases and use them as a basis for a new piece of writing?
