Imagery and Writing

Do you use both parts of your brain – the left part and the right part? Your left brain is the logical, orderly part and it plays a large part in the process of writing. But the right part is the imaginative part, the creative part, and it works in terms of images and pictures rather than words.

So an important habit for writers to develop is that of using the right brain – doodling, sketching, creating visuals and pictures. We all know that a picture is worth a thousand words so, the argument goes, it is sensible to make pictures as part of your writing process.

Ann Palmer’s book is all about using pictures and other visual images (yes, even doodles) in order to expand and free up your creativity as a writer. It is about your relationship with your brain and achieving the balance between images and words. Essentially it maps ways of improving your writing performance by harnessing the power of images.
