But it was the unexplained drowning of her brother, Beheram, a champion swimmer in 1953, which stripped away Farida's childhood. He had forgotten the sadhu's warning not to go to Hawkesbay Beach. It then took a rooftop seance to discover how he had died. The story then moves to the teddy boy London of the 1950's and to Farida's later marriage to a violent man, in her desperation to escape a controlling family and live her own life.
