The animated movie version of Raymond Brigg's award-winning graphic novel is released next Friday
Originally published in 1998, Ethel and Ernest is the very personal story of the lives of Raymond Brigg's parents from their first meeting in 1928. From their home in a working-class London suburb, they live through some of the most tumultuous events of the first half of the 20th century: the Great Depression and World War Two.
Raymond Briggs, 82, is the much-loved author and illustrator of graphic novels including The Snowman, Fungus the Bogeyman and When the Wind Blows.
The film version, adapted by Roger Mainwood and voiced by Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on 15 October and is on general release from 28 October.
