Poets should be between 18 and 25, and must have a London postcode.
The chosen poet will receive commissions worth £9,000, plus development opportunties from London writers' development agency Spread the Word, who are leading on the new appointment.
Six poets will be shortlisted for a development week in July, culminating in opportunities to perform at Southbank and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The announcement of the first Young Poet Laureate for London will be made on National Poetry Day, 3 October.
To apply, poets should send between three and five sample poems, a writer's CV, an ordinary CV, a personal statement, a poem of up to 30 lines inspired by east London, the Olympics or the Olympic legacy, and confirmation that they are available for the development week starting 22 July.
The closing date is 24 June.
