The public is invited to vote for its favourite from the shortlist of six stories
The competition, open to published and unpublished writers, is for single unpublished short stories of up to 4,000 words.
The identities of the writers of the six shortlisted stories will not be revealed until after the public voting closes on 17 January.
The titles, selected from more than 1,400 entries, are:
Still Water, BC
The Forgiveness Thing
The Gun Shearer
The Keeper of the Jackalopes
The Old Man and the Suit
The Papakh Hat
The winner, who will be announced at the Costa Book Awards ceremony on 28 January, will receive £3,500.
