The competition is for writers with a great idea for a mass-market mystery or thriller novel. To enter, writers must be students of the James Patterson Writing Class, which costs $90 for 22 video lessons and exercises.

To enter, send a two-sentence hook and a sample chapter up to 1,000 words.

Ten semi-finalists will be awarded $1,000 based on their hook and sample chapter. Three will be awarded $2,500 and asked to submit book outlines. The overall winner will be chosen to co-author a book with James, and will be awarded $5,000. Last year's winner was Kecia Bal, who has written The Dolls with James.

Entries to the James Patterson Co-author Competition are accepted from writers from the US (excluding Arizona and Louisiana) and DC, Canada (excluding Quebec), the UK and Australia.

Entries open on 1 February and close on 1 March.
