The six-strong shortlist for the £30,000 prize includes three British writers and a debut novelist

The shortlist is:

• Naomi Alderman, The Power

• Linda Grant, The Dark Circle

• C.E. Morgan, The Sport of Kings

• Madeleine Thien, Do Not Say We Have Nothing

• Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀̀, Stay With Me

• Gwendoline Riley, First Love

Longlisted writers who didn't make the shortlist include Margaret Atwood, Annie Proulx and Rose Tremain.

The winner will be announced on 7 June.
