Ruth Rendell, who was patron of Interact Stroke Support, died in May. She was hospitalised in January after suffering a serious stroke.
The competition is for short stories up to 1,000 words in any genre.
The winner will receive £1,000 and be commissioned to write four further stories for Interact Stroke Support over the course of a year.
Interact Stroke Support promotes stroke recovery by delivering a live and interactive reading service to patients who have suffered strokes. The entry fee of £15 supports the charity's work.
The closing date for the competition is 29 October.
