The winners were announced on Chris Evans' BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, live from the Hay Festival this morning

The winners are:

Nine years old and under:

The Starlings of West Pier, Roxanna Toyne (9)

White, Letty Neary-Jones (9)

Stone-Age Steve and the Dragon, Christian Morton (9)

Ten to thirteen years old:

Your Life, Olivia Hunt (12)

Making Mum and Dad, Harry McMurray (10)

The winning stories, as well as the top 50 shortlisted stories, can all be read, downloaded, or listened to online.

Now in its third year, the 2013 500 Words writing competition for children attracted an amazing 90,000 entries.

In each age category, the Gold Medal winner gets Chris Evans' height in books (6'2") plus 500 books for their school library. The Silver Medallist gets co-presenter Alex Jones' hight in books (5'6"), and the Bronze Medal winner gets their own height in books.
