A sad day for writers everywhere, and Writing Magazine, to learn of the death of prolific novelist and short story writer Jean Saunders.

Jean died yesterday afternoon, at the age of 79, after suffering two heart attacks in quick succession.

Jean was a valued contributor to Writing Magazine for many years, a well-respected writing tutor and competition judge, author of hundreds of published short stories, and over 100 books, under a range of pseudonyms, including Rowena Summers, Rachel Moore, Jean Innes, Sally Blake and Jodi Nicol. Most recently, her 1981 novel The Kissing Time was even converted into a manga comic strip.

Jean was an active member of the Romantic Novelists' Association, which she chaired for two years, Romance Writers of America and the Crime Writers' Association, and a familiar face at writing events including Swanwick Writers' Summer School. She will be sorely missed.
