The Scottish poet triumphed over a very strong shortlist with his 11th collection, Black Cat Bone
Judges described the collection as 'outstanding' and 'hauntingly beautiful.'
There was controversy over this year's TS Eliot Prize when two of the shortlisted poets, Alice Oswald and John Kinsella, withdrew in protest about the prize being sponsored by hedge fund managers Aurum.
The remaining shortlist was:
John Burnside, Black Cat Bone (Jonathan Cape); Carol Ann Duffy, The Bees (Picador); Leontia Flynn, Profit and Loss (Jonathan Cape); David Harsent, Night (Faber); Esther Morgan, Grace (Bloodaxe); Daljit Nagra, Tippoo Sultan's Incredible White-Man-Eating Tiger Toy-Machine!!! (Faber); Sean O'Brien, November (Picador); Bernard O'Donoghue, Farmers Cross (Faber).
John was presented with the £15,000 prize by Valerie Eliot at a ceremony in London last night.
