The shortlist for the Best of the James Tait Black Prize features six of the 20th century's finest writers
The award, part of the University of Edinburgh's 250th English Literature anniversary, is a special prize in addition to the annual James Tait Black Prizes, which will be awarded as usual to the best work of fiction and the best biography published in the previous year.
The six authors and books on the Best of... shortlist, all previous winners of the James Tait Black Prize, are:
• Angela Carter, Nights at the Circus
• Graham Greene, The Heart of the Matter
• James Kelman, A Disaffection
• Cormac McCarthy, The Road
• Caryl Phillips, Crossing the River
• Muriel Spark, The Mandelbaum Gate
