Two of the six finalists were also shortlisted for last year's prize
There were more than 1,400 entries for the £3,500 prize, now in its second year. The prize is for an unpublished short story of up to 4,000 words.
The shortlist is:
• Tony Bagley, The Forgiveness Thing
• Clare Chandler, The Gun Shearer
• Sheila Llewellyn, The Papakh Hat
• Angela Readman, The Keeper of the Jackalopes
• Erin Soros, Still Water, BC
• Kit de Waal, The Old Man and The Suit
Sheila Llewellyn and Angela Readman are the two writers who were also shortlisted last year.
The winner will be announced at the Costa Book Awards ceremony on 28 January.
