The Edinburgh International Book Festival launches this weekend. But as the world's biggest annual literary event gears up for action, a lighting strike on an electricity transformer in Ireland last night caused an explosion that has put its website out of action.

Dealing with the unexpected is central to this year's festival, whose theme is revolution. Key writers addressing the topic will be Hisham Matar, Ahdaf Soueif, Dava Sobel, Kamila Shamsie, Peter Ackroyd, Melvyn Bragg and Gao Xingjan. Between 13 and 29 August, the festival will feature 800 writers from more than 40 countries, and will include the launches of new books by A.S. Byatt and Michael Ondaatje. Alasdair Grey will give the world premiere of his re-imagining of the Faust story, Fleck, with Will Self playing the Faust character.

Full details are on www.edbookfest.co.uk, and hopefully the site will be back up later today.
