Now in its second year, the prize is organised by the Bloody Scotland crime-writing festival
The award is open to fiction and non-fiction writers who live or work in Scotland, or have other Scottish roots.
The shortlist is:
• Ann Cleeves, Dead Water (Macmillan)
• Gordon Ferris, Pilgrim Soul (Atlantic)
• Malcolm Mackay, How a Gunman Says Goodbye (Mantle)
• Denise Mina, The Red Road (Orion)
• Val McDermid, The Vanishing Point (Sphere)
• Ian Rankin, Standing in Another Man's Grave (Orion)
Dom Hastings, Bloody Scotland's festival manager, said: 'The wealth and diversity of contemporary Scottish crime writing is demonstrated by this exceptional shortlist, featuring writers at the top of their game, including Ian Rankin and Val McDermid.'
The winner of the £1,000 prize will be announced on 14 September during Bloody Scotland.
