The fiction and poetry prizes each offer £10,000 to the winner
This is the first year in which the poetry and fiction prizes, which used to run in alternate years, have been run together. From 2013, both competitions will run every year.
• The Manchester Poetry Prize is awarded for a portfolio of three to five poems.
• The Manchester Fiction Prize is awarded for a short story of up to 2,500 words.
The closing date for both competitions is 30 August.
The Manchester Writing Competition is run by the Manchester Writing School at Manchester University under the direction of its creative director, Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy (pictured).
