Creative writing prizes: The Northern Writers' Awards 2024

The Awards support writers from the North of England, with a focus on new work-in-progress

Now in their 25th year, Northern Writers Awards are in the following categories for 2024:

• Northern Writers Award for Poetry: £2,000 to £5,000 will be awarded to each of three poets to support emerging and established poets working on a collection. Submit up to 30 poems and a 600-word commentary.

• Northern Debut Awards: Poetry: Three poets yet to publish a full collection will be awarded £2,000, and mentoring. Submit up to 30 poems and a commentary.

• Northern Writers Awards for Fiction and Narrative Non-Fiction: £2.000-£5,000 to support emerging and established writers to complete a novel, short story collection or work of narrative non-fiction. Submit 3,000-6,000 words and a synopsis.

• Northern Debut Awards: Fiction, Narrative Non-Fiction and Young Adult: Two debut authors of fiction and narrative non-fiction and one writer of YA fiction will be awarded £2,000, and mentoring. Submit 3,000-6,000 words and a synopsis.

• Northumbria University Student & Alumni Award: £2,000 for writers of poetry, fiction or narrative non-fiction who are final year students or graduates at Northumbria University. Submit 3,000-6,000 words and a synopsis.

• Young Northern Writers' Awards: Prizes up to £150 for writers aged 11-14 and 15-18.

• Matthew Hale Award: A £500 tailored support package for a writer aged 11-18 who has limited opportunities to pursue their talent.

The closing dates for all these awards is 12 February.
