Creative writing competition: The Brick Lane Bookshop 2024 Short Story Prize

Win a £1,000 first prize in the annual contest funded by the independent Brick Lane Bookshop

The Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Prize is inviting entries of original, unpublished short fiction between 1,000 and 5,000 words.

The winner will receive £1,000 and there are second and third prizes of £250 and £100. The three prizewinners will receive a development meeting with a member of the Spread the Word team, a year's membership of their London Writers' Network and free places on StW courses, and individual feedback on their submission from short story publisher Scratch Books. Twelve longlisted stories will be published in the Brick Lane Bookshop New Short Stories 2024 anthology. A longlisted entry will be published in The London Magazine. The judges are Vanessa Onwuemezi, Dan Bird and Lucy Luck.

Writers entering the contest may have had stories published in journals and anthologies, but must not have published an entire book of their own fiction.

The entry fee is £10 per story. 50 free entries are available for low-income writers.

The closing date is 7 April.
