Since 2013, the Anstruther Improvements Association in Fife has organised a yearly creative competition to revive the tradition of a writing contest held during the Anster Fair that celebrated the 1812 poem of that name by William Tennant.

In the adult category, the short story competition is for stories between 1,500 and 2,500 words and the prize is £100. The poetry competition is for poems up to 40 lines, and also has a £100 prize.

There are also categories for primary and secondary pupils, with prizes of book tokens.

The closing date to enter the Anstruther Writing Awards 2016 is 30 September.
