Kate Atkinson wins the Costa Novel Award for the second time in three years
She has won this year's award for her ninth novel, A God in Ruins, which judges described as 'utterly magnificent and in a class of its own'. Kate won the Whitbread Book of the Year (now the Costa Award) for her first novel, Behind the Scenes at the Museum, in 1995.
The other category award winners are:
• Costa First Novel Award: The Loney, Andrew Michael Hurley
• Costa Biography Award: The Invention of Nature: The Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt, the Lost Hero of Science, Andrea Wulf
• Costa Poetry Award: 40 Sonnets, Don Paterson
• Costa Children's Book Award: The Lie Tree, Frances Hardinge
Each category winner receives £5,000 and goes forward to the Costa Book of the Year Award, which will be announced on 26 January.
