The Tasmanian-born author was awarded the £50,000 prize for The Narrow Road to the Deep North
He was presented with the Man Booker Prize 2014 by the Duchess of Cornwall at a ceremony at the Guildhall last night.
The Narrow Road to the Deep North, about a love affair spanning half a century, involves the story of the construction of the Thailand-Burma Death Railway during World War Two.
This was the first year in its history that the Man Booker has been awarded as an international prize.
The other shortlisted writers were:
• Joshua Ferris, To Rise Again at a Decent Hour
• Karen Joy Fowler, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves
• Howard Jacobson, J
• Neel Mukherjee, The Lives of Others
• Ali Smith, How to be Both
