The renowned and provocative author, critic and journalist has died of pneumonia following a battle with cancer, at the age of 62

He began his writing career in the 1960s, when he was a radical left-winger who wrote for the Socialist Workers' Party magazine International Socialism after being kicked out of the Labour party because he was opposed to the war in Vietnam.

Later in his career, his political views altered, but he retained a consistent capacity for being controversial, caustic and contrary. His strong views and robust writing style contributed towards him being a brilliant writer and columnist who wrote for numerous publications and authored 17 books.

Hitchens was diagnosed with pancratic cancer in June 2010, and documented its progress in his column in Vanity Fair.

'There will never be another Christopher,' said Vanity Fair.
