The winner will also have the chance to meet Jacqueline, and a bundle of books worth £100 will be sent to their school.

'I really hope that through this Creative Writing Prize children will discover that literacy is more than learning about commas and chronological reports. Writing stories isn't just something you do for a test. It should be an enjoyable and exciting activity. Many children ask me how they can become published writers, so I'm delighted that the winning story will be published in one of my own books,' said Jacqueline.

Penguin Random House has launched the new prize, for writers between seven and twelve, with support from Guardian Children's Books and WH Smith. Recorded interviews with Jacqueline Wilson and other successful authors with advice for young writers will be posted on Guardian Children's Books throughout the entry period, and WH Smith will distribute more than 40,000 booklets with creative writing tips from Jacqueline Wilson.

Children entering the Jacqueline Wilson Creative Writing Prize may send fictional stories between 750 and 1,000 words, on any topic. Jacqueline Wilson will be one of the competition judges.

The closing date is 6 May.
