Birkbeck's annual short story anthology is inviting submissions from writers across the UK

The Mechanics' Institute Review is a literary print and ebook anthology of new short fiction by new and established writers. Issue 15 will be published in September 2018. Thanks to Arts Council England funding, The Mechanics' reach has evolved from showcasing work from Birkbeck's Creative Writing Programme and is now national, and stories are invited from writers throughout the UK.

Julia Bell, director of the Creative Writing MA at Birkbeck, said: ‘Short stories are perfectly formed literary achievements. With The Mechanics’ we aim to introduce even more readers to this versatile and powerful art form. As a showcase of the best short-story writers from across the UK, the anthology is an exciting new addition to the wider literary culture – representing diverse and original voices, uncovering new talent, and providing a platform for underrepresented writers.’

Submissions are invited of original, unpublished fiction up to 6,000 words. Writers may submit one story per issue. Writers submitting flash fiction may submit one, two or three pieces up to a total of 2,250 words.

There is no payment for selected writers.

The closing date to submit is 9 February.
