The novelist was awarded the £30,000 prize for his sixth novel Pure at an awards ceremony last night

Geordie Greig, chair of the final judges, said: 'Pure is a rich and evocative historical novel which engrosses with its vivid portrait of pre-revolutionary France. The qualities of Pure stood out for its memorable gothic tale of morality and mortality.'

The Costa Book Award is given to the overall winner out of five categories: novel, poetry, biography, first novel and children's book. Andrew Miller beat poetry category winner Carol Ann Duffy to the overall prize, as well as bookmakers' favourite Matthew Hollis, who won the biography category with Now All Roads Lead to France: The Last Years of Edward Thomas. The judges admitted that their decision had not been unanimous, and that selecting the final winner had been 'a wrangle'.
