Five female poets have been shortlisted from around 900 entrants, who submitted a total of 1,200 poems, for the Edwin Morgan Poetry Competition
The competition was set up in 2008 by the University of Strathclyde with the support of Edwin Morgan, the Makar, or national poet, of Scotland, and hosted by the Edinburgh Book Festival. This year's competition, which has a first prize of £5,000, is the first to be held since Professor Morgan's death last year.
The shortlisted poems are: Loving Medusa, Gill Andrews; Remains, Sarah Jackson; Ossuary, Lydia Macpherson; Leper Window, St Mary the Virgin, Jane McKie and Four Sisters: Sargent's The Daughters of Edward D. Boit, Jane Yeh.
The winner will be announced at the Edinburgh Book Festival in August.
