UK indie publishers put in a very good showing in the longlist for the world's richest prize for a short story collection
Given in honour of Irish short story writer Frank O'Connor, the prize offers €25,000 to the winner.
Collections from Route, Comma, Pewter Rose Press, Newcon Press, Freight, Skylight Press and Salt are in the running along with This Is How You Lose Her, the collection by Pultizer Prize-winning writer Junot Diaz that includes Miss Lora, which recently won the £30,000 Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award.
The shortlist will be announced in May, and the winner, who will be announced in July, will presented with the prize at the Cork International Short Story Festival in September. In the week running up to the award's presentation, 500 short story collections will be left in public places in Cork for members of the public to take home and read.
