More than 74,000 children sent in entries to the BBC Radio 2 competition for short stories

The winners were broadcast live from the Hay Festival this morning.

Chris Evan was not there for the anouncement because his baby son Eli had just been born.

The winning stories in the nine years old and under category are: Coming Home by Isobel Murray (age 7); Cow on a Bus by Guy Rose (age 9), and If Only I Could Switch My Mum Off! by Eloise Schaw Miller (age 8).

The winning entries in the ten to thirteen category are: Defining Moments by Isobel Harwood (age 12); SPLASH! by Millie Haldane (age 10), and Me and You by Poppy Holloway (age 11).

Entries to the BBC's children's short story competition were the subject of a survey by Oxford University Press which revealed the extent to which American English has colonised the language. The survey included the fact that, out of nearly 300 instances of the word 'blackberry,' more than half referred to mobile phones.
