Luke Bitmead (pictured), whose novel White Summer was Legend Press's first title, died in 2006. His family have worked with Legend Press on the award and to help reduce the stigma attached to mental health issues.
The bursary is for complete, unpublished novels over 50,000 words by writers who have not previously had a novel traditionally published. Submissions of self-published novels are accepted, and writers may have been traditionally published in any other form except a novel. All submissions must be of adult fiction.
To submit to the 2014 Luke Bitmead Bursary, writers should send a one-page synopsis, a personal statement introducing themselves to the judges and outlining why they would benefit from the bursary, and the first three to four chapters, or up to 50 pages, of the novel.
The closing date is 1 August.
