I was a features writer at my local newspaper, The Chester Chronicle, when I was contacted by Janet Holt from Derbyshire, asking if I could help her to write her life story. She sent me an initial manuscript which had the lovely, light-hearted tone of All Creatures Great and Small (she was a farmer) - until, half way through, when I read a couple of paragraphs where she described the disappearance of her business partner in 1976 - and the hairs stood up on the back of my neck.

She sent me an initial manuscript which had the lovely, light-hearted tone of All Creatures Great and Small (she was a farmer) - until, half way through, when I read a couple of paragraphs where she described the disappearance of her business partner in 1976 - and the hairs stood up on the back of my neck.

I discovered that Fred Handford’s disappearance was still an ‘open case’ with Derbyshire police and after meeting Janet and speaking to a good friend of mine who is a practising psychologist, Janet agreed to attend therapy.

I wrote The Stranger In My Life, partly in flashback from Janet’s notes and interviews and partly in real time as she attended her therapy sessions. The result led to me being questioned by police and the manuscript confiscated but eventually, we published the book on Amazon. It has since received more than 100 five star reviews and in October 2018 Jane’s story was the subject of an ITV documentary entitled Am I a Murdererhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Stranger-My-Life-Autobiography/dp/1480169897/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+stranger+in+my+life&qid=1601555271&sr=8-1
