Jack's Sea by Janet Turner
Jack’s Sea is a heart-warming mystery story about artist Ben’s fight, following his divorce, to have his eight year old son, Jack, live with him. Ben’s friends, Locryn and Sally supported Ben through rough times and now seek to call in the favour Ben owes them. After a fire when Ben lost all his pictures and his storage facility he has to take out a loan. Locryn and Sally, too, are in debt and the three need to acquire money urgently.
Locryn’s father failed to return from a sailing venture so Locryn’s mother, Kerenza, is also destitute. Locryn tells Ben of a ‘project’ he and his friend, John, are devising which should reward them with enough money to put them on their feet. Locryn coerces Ben into helping but, although Ben is hesitant, suspecting the project is illegal and not wanting to jeopardise his chances of having Jack to live with him, he agrees. Having reconsidered, he withdraws. Jack must come first. Locryn realises engaging in the project would harm his and Sally’s young daughters so he backs out too. Finally Ben and Locryn get together planning arrangements that will enable them to look forward to happier futures.
