When fifteen- year- old MYFANWY MORGAN leaves her home in the Welsh mountains for a new life in industrial Manchester, she has to grow up fast in a harsh, sometimes cruel world.

Leaving her father, brother and her childhood sweetheart, HUW LLEWELLYN, she goes to live with her aunt MAGGIE in Sanderson Street. Working in a local cotton mill, she soon makes new friends and admirers. SONNY HARVEY, son of the local shopkeeper, quickly falls for her fresh, innocent charms, as does, SEAN McDOWELL, the eldest son of a large Irish family, who are well-known, if not feared in the back-streets.

The Second World War brings hardships and heartbreak, as the young men of Sanderson Street are sent to fight in far- off lands. Myfanwy, along with her friends, DORA and KATHLEEN, are deployed to work in the munitions and air-craft factories.

As war intensifies, the lives of the three girls become entwined by friendship, jealousy and tragedy. For Myfanwy and her friends and neighbours, life has to go on in a world changed forever.
