Welcome to the 10th anniversary edition of this popular book – its previous edition sold more than 40,000 copies. It is all about finding ideas for creative writing – particular for novels, short stories and poetry.

Its chapters are arranged in four sections that form a logical sequence of creative work: warming up; deciding on your subject matter, and starting to generate ideas; finding a form for your ideas; developing your ideas. In each chapter there is an extensive list of ‘prompts’, and the prompts are suggestions for directions that your thought process might take in order to uncover ideas.

The narrative in each chapter explores the ways in which the prompts can relate to your own personal experiences, and the narrative and the prompts work together to combine both discipline and creativity in the idea generating process. But Jack Heffron avoids turning all this into hard work: he believes that your idea-finding sessions should be fun, and that enjoyment should drive your writing.
