The new bursary will provide a £1,000 launchpad for a writer who needs a leg up

The Kimberley Chambers Kickstart Prize was launched on Saturday at CrimeFest by HarperCollins publishers, Peters, Fraser & Dunlop literary agency and CrimeFest. The bestselling gangland crime writer wrote her first novel with a pad and a pen, and and still writes all her books – including her latest, Life of Crime – in longhand.

The bursary recipient will get £1,000 to help with writing essentials (ie, a laptop), time with Kimberley's editor, and an offer of representation from Peters, Fraser & Dunlop.

To apply, send the first three chapters of a novel, a 500-word synopsis and a short paragraph about why you need a kickstart.

The closing date is 31 October.
