Selected writers will each recieve £2,000, a week-long writing retreat and tailored development opportunities

There are three categories in the Scottish Book Trust New Writers' Awards 2019:

• Fiction and narrative non-fiction (five awards)

Submit personal details, a list of writing achievements to date (up to 500 words), a personal statement (up to 500 words) and a writing sample (up to 3,500 words). If the sample is from a longer work, also send a synopsis (up to 500 words).

• Poetry in English and Scots (three awards)

Submit personal details, a list of writing achievements (up to 500 words), a personal statement (up to 500 words), up to 10 poems (maximum 220 lines) or a recording of performance poetry (up to five minutes, plus a written transcript) and a synopsis up to 500 words if the poems/recording are part of a longer work.

• Children's and young adult fiction in English and Scots (two awards)

Submit personal details, list of writing achievements (up to 500 words), personal statement (to 500 words), writing sample (to 500 words) and synopsis if the sample is part of a longer work.

Advertisements

Applicants for the New Writers' Awards must be over 18, based in Scotland, and committed to developing a career in writing. They must not have published a novel, narrative non-fiction book or collection of stories or poems, and must not currently be in formal education.

The closing date to apply is 4 July.
