Leading the celebrations, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will lay a wreath on Dickens' grave during a service in Westminster Abbey, where the author is buried. Charles and Camilla will also visit the Charles Dickens Museum in London, where actress Gillian Anderson - who recently played Miss Havisham in the BBC adaptation of Great Expectations - will give them a private reading.

Actor Simon Callow will read from David Copperfield, widely believed to be partly autobiographical, at a service in Rochester, where Dickens, who died in 1870, would have liked to have been buried.

An international Dickens readathon begins in Australia with Dombey and Son.

Bringing Dickens firmly into the 21st century, today also sees the launch of a Dickens iPad app.
