Published for the first time by the Cabinet Office, a list of people who snubbed royal honours includes writers Roald Dahl, Aldous Huxley and Graham Greene

The list, previously kept secret but published on Wednesday evening (25 January) as a result of a BBC Freedom of Information request, contains the names of the 277 people who rejected an honour between 1949 and 1999 and have since died. The honours refused include OBEs, CBEs and knighthoods offered in the annual New Year or Birthday Honours.

Other literary names on the list include critic F R Leavis, poet Philip Larkin, writers CS Lewis, Robert Graves, JB Priestley, Evelyn Waugh and Eleanor Farjeon and Booker winner Stanley Middleton.

The person to reject the most honours (five in total) was the artist LS Lowry.
