Three first time authors are in the running for this year's £10,000 Desmond Elliott Prize ...
A shortlist of three has been announced for this year's £10,00 Desmond Elliot Prize, which was set up after the death of publisher, literary agent and bon viveur Desmond Elliot in 2003 to support and celebrate new authors
The three authors in line for the prize are rated with bookmaker William Hill's odds: Anjali Joseph, 6/4 favourite with Saraswati Park (Fourth Estate); Stephen Kelman, 7/4 second favourite with Pigeon English (Bloomsbury), and third favourite Ned Beaumann, at 2/1 with Boxer Beetle (Sceptre).
Anjali and Ned are journalists. Stephen has been a civil servant, a careworker and a warehouse operative.
The winner will be announced on 23 June at Fortnum and Mason, which is where Desmond Elliot used to buy groceries.
