Today, National Poetry Day, brings the news that John Burnside has won the Forward poetry prize, and the Poetry Society has announced the winners of the Foyle Young Poet of the Year Award have been announced.
Scottish poet John Burnside was awarded the £10,000 Forward prize, at a ceremony at Somerset House last night, for his collection Black Cat Bone (pictured). Burnside was shortlisted for the Forward prize in 2000, 2005 and 2007. At the same ceremony, Rachael Boast won the £5,000 prize for best first collection for Sidereal, and RF Langley, who died in January, won the the prize for best single poem for To a Nightingale.
There were 15 overall winners, aged between 11 and 17, of the Foyle Young Poet of the Year Award, and a further 85 young poets were highly commended. All 100 young poets will take part in a ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall today.
The 15 overall winners are as follows:
Safrina Ahmed, Matt Broomfield, Eleanor Coy, Alexandra Cussons, Flora de Falbe, Polly Fullerton, Joel Lipton, Robert Marston, Jessica Mayhew, Emma McNairy, Phoebe Stuckes, Emma Townley-Smith, Jenny Walker, Elisabeth Wilson and Laura Wanamaker.
