Now in its ninth year, the independent Words and Music Festival is a combination of gigs and spoken-word events. It will take place in Nantwich between 10 and 16 October.

The competition is for original, unpublished poems up to 40 lines. The first prize is £150, the second prize is £75 and the third prize is £50. Winners will be invited to read at a prize-giving ceremony. The best local resident (living within 20 miles of Nantwich) will get two tickets to see punk performance poet John Cooper Clarke on 15 October, and the opportunity to read at the prize-giving ceremony.

The entry fee is £4 per poem, or £10 for three. The closing date is 15 September.
