The annual competition is for the best proposal for a book-length essay by an unpublished writer

The winner will receive £3,000, which is an advance against publication with Fitzcarraldo Editions. The winner will also be offered the opportunity to spend up to three months during summer 2018 in a residency at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios in Spoleto, Italy, to work on their book.

To enter, submit a proposal no longer than 5,000 words for a book-length essay of at least 25,000 words. Entrants may also submit a writing sample up to 5,000 words. The proposal must be original and unpublished. The writing sample may have been previously published. Writers entering the competition may have published fiction and non-fiction in journals and magazines, but must not have published a full-length book.

The Fitzcarraldo Editions Essay Prize is free to enter. The closing date is 15 March.
