His novel, The Shock of the Fall (HarperCollins), was described by chair of judges Rose Tremain as: 'Perfectly moving without being sentimental. This book stood out in a very good list.'
The Shock of the Fall is a story of two brothers, and explores mental health, grief and loss. Nathan, who lectures in creative writing at Bath Spa University, is a qualified mental health nurse.
He beat other Costa category winners: novelist Kate Atkinson; biographer Lucy Hughes-Hallett; poet Michael Symmons Roberts, and children's author Chris Riddell.
At the same ceremony, Angela Readman was announced as the winner of the £3,500 Costa Short Story Award for her story The Keeper of the Jackalopes.
