We are sad to learn that Michael Legat, a long-term and much-valued contributor to Writing Magazine, has died
Michael Legat, who contributed the Publishing Snippets column, was a distinguished and much-loved figure in the publishing world. Born in 1923, he joined The Bodley Head in 1941, later becoming editorial director first of Transworld Publishers and then of Cassell & Co. He was also a prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction, and, amongst other positions, chairman of the Writers' Summer School at Swanwick.
Michael's Publishing Snippets column displayed not just an in-depth knowledge of the publishing industry, but the gentlemanly attitude that gained him respect and admiration throughout his long career. His principled opinions, elegant writing and the sense of gravitas that his lifetime experience in publishing brought to his work will be greatly missed.
Michael died on August 15.
