NEW ONLINE COURSES FOR WRITERS WITH NO TIME OR MONEY

Writers’ HQ has launched five new online creative courses to help time- and finance-poor writers find the time and space to write.

"We know all too well how hard it is to hold down a job, wrangle a family, and deal with the evil imposter syndrome and guilt that comes with trying to carve out time to write," say Writers' HQ. "And in the last four years of running writing retreats in the South East we’ve met hundreds of time-starved, finance-poor writers who feel the same.

"And so, we decided SOMETHING MUST BE DONE and put together five new affordable, arse-kicking, profanity-laden, online writing courses, covering everything from idea generation to short fiction to novel writing to manuscript submission. These short 1-6 week workshops will help you to develop your writing skills in small, manageable chunks, whenever you can fit them in. AND, with the aid of a development grant from Arts Council England, we’re ecstatic to be able to offer five fully subsidised places on all our short courses for a whole year."

Over the last four years, Writers’ HQ has helped extract more than 300,000 words from writers at their retreats and courses in Brighton and Worthing. The idea started with environmental journalist and editor Sarah Lewis, frustrated and trying to run away from her VERY LOUD family for five minutes’ peace to write. And boom, a monthly writing retreat fuelled by caffeine, biscuits, sandwiches and gold stars was born. When Jo Gatford, winner of Legend Press' Luke Bitmead Bursary in 2013, arrived at that first Brighton Writers’ Retreat – an equally time-starved, height-challenged, sweary, and tea-obsessed writer – the future really was a done deal.

About the courses

Maybe you've got a story stuck in your head that you're desperate to get down on paper; or maybe you've made a start but are struggling to bring all the elements of your story together; or maybe you've finished a first draft but have no frickin' idea what to do with it next.
The solution? Stop faffing about and start writing – WHQ’s procrastination-busting workshops will give you the kick up the bum you need to start writing, finish your story, and get it published, whether you're a total noob, a mid-project writer, or a veteran with a hard-drive full of first drafts.
There are five short online writing courses available, each divided into bite-sized portions that can be completed in a few hours each week, whenever you can squeeze them into your schedule. Each course includes practical techniques, writing prompts and exercises, advice from top published authors, agents and editors, online support, access to a student forum and productivity tools, and a hands-on curriculum that will help you get from that initial idea all the way to publication. One-on-one feedback is also available from tutors as an optional extra.
All the courses run on a rolling basis so if you miss the registration date, never fear – they'll be running them all over again soon! Plus, coming soon: the Nine Month Novel Gestation course – an in-depth, hand-holding, whip-cracking tour through writing a book.
