The competition, sponsored by the Haymarket Media Group in honour of the writer and broadcaster Anthony Howard, is for working or aspiring journalists under 27.

Anthony Howard, who died in 2010, was one of the most renowned political commentators of his generation. During his distinguished career, he worked for The Times and the Observer and was editor of the New Statesman. The winner of the prize will undertake internships, each of 14 weeks, at these three publications. During that time, the winner will research and write the 5,000-word essay they proposed.

To enter The Anthony Howard Award for Young Journalists 2016, submit a detailed proposal for a 5,000-word piece on an aspect of British politics or government, plus an example of writing (up to 800 words) and a CV. The judges will be looking for flair, imagination and wit.
