Now in its fourth year, the Guardian's annual, hotly-contested prize has similar entry criteria to the Booker: nominations must be of full-length novels written by a writer from the Commonwealth, the Republic of Ireland or Zimbabwe, not in translation, and published (not self-published) between October 2011 and September 2012.

Members of the public may nominate any suitable book by posting its title in the comments box on the Not the Booker page on the newspaper's website.

The longlist will be posted in a week.

In order to vote for a longlisted book to go through to the shortlist, readers have to demonstrate that they've actually read it by posting a review on the Guardian's reader reviews page.

The winner will get a Guardian mug.
