Author Joanna Cannon and The Writers' Workshop are offering a bursary so that an unpublished writer can attend the writing festival that changed Joanna's fortunes

Joanna attended the Festival of Writing in York in 2014, and won the Friday Night Live competition. Shortly after leaving the festival, she had offers of representation from seven literary agents. She signed with Sue Armstrong of Conville & Walsh and her deubt novel, The Trouble with Goats and Sheep, was published by Borough Press in January this year.

The Goat Bursary is available to one unpublished, unagented writer who needs financial support to attend the Festival of Writing. The bursary, worth more than £800, includes two nights' accommodation, a festival pass, meals, travel expenses and feedback from Joanna's agent Sue Armstrong.

The Festival of Writing will take place in York between 9 and 11 September.

To apply for The Goat Bursary, send a 500-word sample of writing and a letter explaining why you'd like to attend the Festival of Writing by the closing date of 22 August
