The best fiction and poetry entries will each win €300. One of these will then be chosen as the overall winner and will receive an additional €400. The 2014 Over the Edge New Writer of the Year will be a featured reader at an Over the Edge open reading in Galway City Library later in the year, and the winners' manuscripts will be read by two leading Irish presses, Salmon Poetry (poetry) and Doire Press (short stories). The competition will be judged by poet Eleanor Hooker (pictured).
Writers should not have a book published or accepted for publication in the genre they wish to enter.
Short stories may be up to 3,000 words.
Poets may enter three poems up to 40 lines, or one poem of 100 lines.
All entries to the 2014 Over the Edge New Writer of the Year Competition must be original and previously unpublished. There is an entry fee of €10 (one story or three poems) or €7.50 for multiple entries.
The closing date is 6 August.
