It is the second year running that the Scottish crime writer has won the award
This year's win is for Gods and Beasts, Denise's tenth novel and the third in her Alex Monroe series.
The award, which was voted by a combination of public vote and a panel of judges, was presented last night at Theakstons Old Peculier Cime Writing Festival in Harrogate.
'I'm really quite flabbergasted,' said Denise. 'This was such a hard book. I really love this book and it means a lot other people appreciate it as it could hav crashed and burned. I'm so delighted and so glad to have another gigantic ostentatious award in the shape of a Theakstons beer barrel that I don't have room foron my mantlepiece.'
At the same ceremony, Ruth Rendell was presented with the fourth Theakstons Old Peculier Outstanding Contribution to Crime Fiction Award. Previous recipients were P.D. James, Colin Dexter and Reginald Hill.
